Laser Resurfacing
Laser resurfacing is second only to liposuction in popularity as a cosmetic surgical procedure.
We have been involved in resurfacing with the carbon dioxide and latterly Erbium Yag lasers for fifteen years. The most suitable candidates for the procedure are those with facial pigmentation, light wrinkling and skin lesions caused by sun exposure and acne scarring.
Laser resurfacing of the entire face requires general anaesthesia and to be carried out as a day-stay procedure at our day stay surgical facility. Full facial resurfacing can be very effective for superficial skin problems but is not able to correct the structural changes in the face caused by aging.
It is very important that you understand the consequences of the surgery in particular the immediate postoperative appearance and the long recovery period. A detailed preoperative consultation in which you will be shown photographs is offered.
Skin resurfacing is most useful in treating small areas like upper lips, which commonly crease with age. This can be done easily with a local anaesthetic technique. It produces results superior to chemical peeling. Laser resurfacing can also be used as an adjunctive technique to enhance the results of eyelid surgery.
All surgery has the potential for adverse consequences and complications; these will be detailed to you preoperatively and your suitability for the procedure honestly assessed.
