Tummy Tuck
Abdominoplasty
Tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is an operation designed to reduce excess abdominal skin and fat but is not particularly suitable for those who are terribly obese in which a diet and exercise programme to lose weight is the best initial management.
Most abdominoplasty patients have an excess of lower abdominal skin, often with an overhang and stretch marks as a result of pregnancy. They may also have lower abdominal muscles which are lax and of poor tone which do not respond to exercise.
An abdominoplasty done through a crosswise lower abdominal incision removes the excess skin and fat and tightens the abdominal muscles.
The operation is done under general anaesthesia with an overnight hospital stay and takes about three hours to complete.
The resulting lower abdominal scar is usually of very good quality after a few months and is easily hidden with underwear.
